Turning total rise into a workable stair
A stair begins with the vertical distance between finished floors, not the rough framing height. Divide that total rise by a target riser height to obtain an initial riser count, then round to a whole number and divide the total rise again by that count. The second division matters: once the count changes, the actual riser height changes too. For a 2.8 m rise and a 0.175 m target, the initial result is 16 risers and the recalculated riser height remains 0.175 m.
Checking the result against the space
The calculator is useful during early layout because it shows whether a preferred riser is plausible. It does not determine tread depth, stair angle, headroom, landing size or opening length. Those dimensions interact. A comfortable-looking riser count can still produce a stair that does not fit the available run, so sketch the complete flight and check both finished-floor levels before cutting stringers.
Where stair estimates go wrong
Building rules set limits for riser height, tread depth, consistency, guards and handrails. Requirements vary by location and building type, so treat the result as a layout starting point. Measure finishes that will be installed later, keep every riser equal, and have structural details reviewed where required. Small variations spread over a flight can create an unsafe final step.
A final rise-and-run check
Record the whole riser count, actual riser height and intended tread depth on the same sketch. Multiply tread depth by the number of treads to estimate horizontal run, then check landings, headroom and the floor opening. Keeping these values together exposes a flight that is numerically consistent but physically impossible to install.

Why is the riser count rounded?
A stair cannot have a fraction of a riser. After rounding, divide the total rise by the whole count to obtain the actual uniform riser height.
Does the calculator determine tread depth?
No. Tread depth and total run must be designed separately and checked together with the riser height.
Should finished flooring be included?
Yes. Measure from finished floor to finished floor because different finish thicknesses can change the first or last riser.
Can this result be used for construction approval?
