From deck dimensions to board coverage
Decking quantity depends on the surface area and the effective width covered by each board-and-gap module. The calculator divides deck area by board coverage, then adds the selected waste percentage. A 6 m by 4 m deck has 24 m² of surface. With 0.14 m boards and 0.006 m gaps, each repeating course covers 0.146 m across the deck; board direction and available stock lengths then determine how that coverage becomes actual pieces.
Choosing a sensible waste allowance
A simple rectangular deck using full-length boards may need only a modest allowance. Diagonal installation, picture-frame borders, short stock lengths, knots, damaged ends and complex edges create more offcuts. Waste should reflect the layout rather than being copied from another project. Prepare a board-by-board sketch when joints must land on joists or when several board lengths will be mixed.
Planning beyond the surface boards
This estimate covers the visible deck boards, not joists, beams, posts, fixings, fascia or foundations. Confirm the manufacturer’s required gap because timber movement and composite-board instructions differ. Check actual board width rather than nominal width, decide the laying direction before ordering, and verify whether products are sold by piece, pack or linear metre.
Measure in the direction boards will run
The same deck area can require different stock lengths depending on orientation. Mark board and joist direction, every planned joint and the usable supplied lengths. This turns an area estimate into a cutting plan and prevents ordering short boards where continuous lengths were expected.
