Reading wall area as a block count
Block quantity is estimated by dividing gross wall area by the face area of one installed block, then adding waste. For a 6 m by 2.4 m wall and an installed block module of 0.08 m², the gross count is 180 blocks before waste. Use the modular face area—including the intended mortar joint—rather than simply multiplying nominal catalogue dimensions.
Mortar joints, openings and block modules
Subtract large doors and windows when appropriate, then add special units separately. Corners, bond beams, lintels, half blocks and cut units may not be represented by the standard block count. Wall thickness does not change the face-area count for a single wythe, but multiple wythes must be treated as separate wall faces.
A better masonry takeoff
A useful takeoff distinguishes standard blocks from special shapes and checks whole bundles or pallets. Waste depends on handling, cuts and whether intact leftovers can be used elsewhere. This tool does not calculate mortar, grout, reinforcement or structural capacity; those depend on the wall system and design requirements.
Count special blocks on a separate line
After calculating standard units, review the drawing course by course for corners, ends, lintels, bond beams and penetrations. List each special block type separately. Keeping special units outside the waste percentage reduces the risk of having enough total blocks but the wrong shapes.
Finally, compare the calculated standard-block count with the course-by-course drawing total. A small difference may be rounding; a large difference usually signals an opening, wall return or modular dimension that needs another review.

Large openings are normally deducted, while small openings may be left within the waste allowance depending on the takeoff method.
