Standard amortizing-loan payment after the down payment.

Informational estimate only. Verify important financial, health, engineering, or regulatory decisions with a qualified professional.

An auto-loan payment begins with the amount financed: vehicle price minus down payment. The calculator then applies the standard fixed-rate amortization formula over the entered number of months. It isolates principal and interest so shoppers can test financing choices before discussing taxes, registration, insurance or dealer products.

Separate price from financing

Negotiate and record the vehicle price independently from the monthly payment. A dealer can lower a payment by extending the term even when the price or total interest is higher. Test the same vehicle price across several rates and terms, then calculate the total of all payments.

Account for costs outside the tool

Sales tax, registration, documentation fees, trade-in equity, rebates and add-ons are not represented unless they are included in the vehicle price or financed amount. Insurance, maintenance, fuel and depreciation also affect affordability but are not loan payments.

Compare a shorter and longer term

A larger down payment or shorter term generally reduces interest exposure, while a longer term reduces the monthly payment but keeps debt outstanding longer. Compare the remaining loan balance with expected vehicle value, especially when considering a small down payment.

Interpretation checklist

  • Confirm the exact amount financed.
  • Use the offered annual rate, not an advertised best rate.
  • Review total interest and all payments.
  • Check for prepayment terms and mandatory add-ons.

Before accepting an offer, obtain a written itemization showing vehicle price, taxes, fees, trade allowance, cash down and amount financed. Recreate the payment from those figures. A mismatch can reveal a product rolled into the loan, a different term or a rate that was not the one discussed.

Are taxes and dealer fees included?

Only if you add them to the financed vehicle price.

Does a down payment earn interest?

No. It reduces the principal on which loan interest is calculated.

Usually, but it can increase total interest and negative-equity risk.

Does this include a trade-in?

Enter net trade-in equity as part of the down payment after any existing loan payoff is considered.
