From paved area to individual units

The calculator divides project area by the face area of one paver and then applies the selected waste percentage. A 8 m by 5 m area contains 40 m². With 0.20 m by 0.10 m pavers, each unit covers 0.02 m², so the theoretical count is 2,000; adding 10% produces 2,200 pavers.

Pattern and edge cuts change the order

That arithmetic assumes the entered dimensions are the installed face dimensions. Herringbone, diagonal layouts, curves, borders and contrasting bands create more cuts than a straight running pattern. When more than one paver size is used, calculate the pattern mix from the manufacturer’s coverage information instead of treating every unit as identical.

Before pallets arrive on site

Check pallet quantities, colour batches and replacement availability before ordering. The result excludes bedding sand, jointing material, edge restraints, excavation and sub-base aggregate. Measure the finished paved outline rather than the excavation, and plan drainage falls separately because slope affects levels even when plan area stays the same.

Check coverage by pack or pallet

Convert the final unit count into supplier pack or pallet quantities and round to purchasable units. Confirm whether a pallet mixes sizes and whether opened packs can be returned. Ordering by the actual sales unit avoids a correct count that cannot be purchased as calculated.

Save a few intact units from the same production batch for future repairs where practical. Colour and texture can vary between batches, so replacement availability is part of planning even when the initial count is accurate.

Why is the result rounded up?

Only whole pavers can be purchased, and rounding down would leave the measured area incomplete.

Do joint widths change the count?

They can. Use manufacturer coverage data when joints are significant or paver dimensions do not represent the installed module.

What waste percentage is appropriate?

Straight rectangular work generally needs less than curved, diagonal or highly patterned layouts.

Does the result include the sub-base?

No. Bedding, jointing material, edge restraints and aggregate layers require separate estimates.
