Calculating mulch by volume
Mulch is a volume calculation: multiply bed length by width by the installed depth. Convert the depth to metres before multiplying. A 6 m by 3 m bed covered 0.075 m deep requires 1.35 m³. If a landscape bed is curved, divide it into measurable shapes, calculate each portion and add the volumes rather than using the largest bounding rectangle.
Depth matters more than it first appears
Doubling the depth doubles the volume. That makes a depth entry error much more expensive than a small rounding difference. Measure the settled depth you want across the bed and consider whether existing mulch will remain. Very deep organic mulch can hold excess moisture against trunks and stems, so follow horticultural guidance for the plants and keep material away from direct contact where appropriate.
Ordering bags or bulk mulch
Bulk suppliers normally sell by cubic metre or cubic yard, while bags are labelled by volume. Divide the required volume by the volume per bag and round up. Fresh mulch can settle during handling and decomposition, and irregular beds are difficult to measure perfectly, so add a moderate project-specific allowance without turning it into an arbitrary large surplus.
Separate beds with different depths
Trees, shrubs and shallow-rooted areas may not use the same mulch depth. Calculate those zones independently instead of averaging one depth across the garden. This produces a more defensible volume and makes it easier to direct each part of a bulk delivery to the correct bed.
