Estimating soil for a level layer

Topsoil volume equals length multiplied by width multiplied by the required average depth. For an 8 m by 5 m area receiving a 0.10 m layer, the theoretical volume is 4 m³. Measure depth in several places when the ground is uneven and use a realistic average; one measurement at the highest or lowest point can distort the order.

Allowing for settlement and existing grades

Loose soil settles after spreading, watering and trafficking. The amount varies with texture, moisture and compaction, so a universal settlement percentage is unreliable. Also distinguish between raising the finished grade and replacing poor soil: mixing amendments into existing ground is not the same as installing a full new layer.

A practical delivery check

Before delivery, confirm access, tipping location and the supplier’s unit. Soil may be sold by loose cubic volume, by bag or by weight. The calculator estimates geometric volume and does not convert to tonnes because bulk density can vary widely. Avoid compacting wet topsoil and verify drainage and finished levels around buildings.

Check finished levels, not only volume

Use stakes or level marks to establish the intended finished surface before calculating average depth. Maintain drainage away from structures and avoid burying stems, paving edges or ventilation openings. A correct cubic-metre result can still create problems if the final grade is unsuitable.

Record the ordered volume, delivery date and actual spread depth after installation. Comparing those figures creates a useful reference for later garden phases and exposes whether settlement or site grading differed from the original assumption.

The other dimensions are in metres, so depth must also be in metres to produce cubic metres.

Does the answer include settlement?

No fixed settlement factor is applied. Add an allowance suited to the soil type, moisture and intended compaction.

Only with a reliable bulk-density value for the specific soil at its current moisture condition.
