Net worth = assets − liabilities.
Informational estimate only. Verify important financial, health, engineering, or regulatory decisions with a qualified professional.
Net worth is a balance-sheet snapshot: total assets minus total liabilities. Assets of 250,000 and liabilities of 175,000 produce net worth of 75,000. A negative result means debts exceed recorded assets at that date; it does not by itself describe monthly cash flow or future earning ability.
Use realistic values
Cash and investment balances are straightforward, but vehicles, property, businesses and collectibles require defensible current values rather than original purchase prices. Selling costs and taxes may reduce what an asset could actually contribute. Update debts using current payoff balances where possible.
Track direction over time
One number is less informative than a consistent series. Calculate net worth on a regular schedule using the same valuation method. Changes can then be connected to saving, debt repayment, investment movement or asset purchases rather than differences in measurement.
Separate liquidity from wealth
A household can have positive net worth but little accessible cash if most value is tied up in property or retirement accounts. Review liquid reserves and monthly obligations alongside the total before using net worth to make short-term decisions.
Interpretation checklist
- Use values from the same date.
- Avoid double-counting linked accounts or assets.
- Record current liability balances.
- Track liquid and illiquid assets separately.
Keep supporting statements or valuation notes with each snapshot. A repeatable record reduces accidental omissions and makes large changes easier to explain. It also distinguishes genuine financial progress from a revised property estimate or an account that was counted differently.
Review beneficiary designations and ownership separately because net worth arithmetic does not determine legal access or estate treatment.
Questions people ask about Net Worth Calculator
Should a home be included?
It can be included at a reasonable current value, with the related mortgage recorded as a liability.
Is income part of net worth?
No. Income affects net worth only after it changes assets or liabilities.
How often should net worth be calculated?
Monthly, quarterly or annually can work if the method is consistent.
Does negative net worth mean insolvency?
Not necessarily. Liquidity, payment ability, asset saleability and legal definitions also matter.
