Total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) is the energy used across a day. This calculator multiplies an entered basal metabolic rate by an activity multiplier. It is useful for a starting estimate, but neither input measures actual daily expenditure.

How the multiplier changes BMR

The formula is BMR × activity multiplier. A BMR of 1,600 kcal/day with a multiplier of 1.5 gives an estimated TDEE of 2,400 kcal/day. The multiplier is intended to represent movement, exercise and other energy use beyond basal metabolism in one simplified value.

Why real expenditure moves around

Workdays, training, illness, sleep, temperature and spontaneous movement vary. BMR equations also have individual error. A precise-looking result should therefore be treated as the centre of a trial range rather than an exact maintenance prescription.

A practical calibration method

  • Use a BMR estimate based on consistent, current measurements.
  • Choose the multiplier that reflects typical weeks, not the hardest workout.
  • Track intake and weight trends under comparable conditions for several weeks.
  • Adjust gradually if the observed trend differs from the planned result.

This simple multiplication does not model metabolic adaptation during weight change. It is not designed for children, pregnancy, breastfeeding or medical nutrition therapy; those situations need a suitable specialist method.

A maintenance check works best with trends rather than day-to-day scale changes. Compare average body weight across similar weeks while keeping intake records as consistent as practical. Water, glycogen, food mass and menstrual-cycle changes can temporarily obscure the energy trend, so immediate large adjustments can send the estimate in the wrong direction.
