Understanding the result

Estimated blood volume can be approximated from body weight and an assumed millilitres-per-kilogram factor. This tool multiplies those inputs and converts millilitres to litres. It is educational and is not suitable for transfusion, fluid-resuscitation or dosing decisions.

Track the conversion

The equation is weight (kg) × factor (mL/kg) ÷ 1,000. At 70 kg with a factor of 70 mL/kg, the estimate is 4,900 mL, or 4.9 litres. Changing the factor to 65 would produce 4.55 litres for the same weight.

The factor is an assumption

Blood volume relative to weight varies with age, body composition, pregnancy and clinical state. A single factor cannot represent every adult or child. More detailed published equations may incorporate height and sex, but they also remain estimates rather than direct measurements.

Limits that matter clinically

  • Do not select a factor only to obtain an expected result.
  • Obesity, dehydration, oedema and acute illness can weaken simple weight-based assumptions.
  • A normal-looking estimate does not show actual circulating volume or blood loss.
  • Clinical teams use condition-specific assessment, monitoring and protocols.

Keep the input factor with any recorded result so the assumption is visible. Reporting only the litres can create false certainty, especially when two reasonable factors give materially different answers.

A sensitivity check makes the uncertainty visible: calculate the result with the lower and upper factors supported by the context, then report that range and both assumptions. This is more informative than choosing the midpoint and displaying many decimals. Even the range remains a model and should not be confused with measured circulating volume.
